Student Struggle with Career-oriented Assignments: An Analysis of Résumés and Cover Letters

Résumé and cover letter formats have altered with the many digital platforms available (e.g., LinkedIn). However, constructing one’s identity as an ideal candidate is still main goal for career-oriented documents should be focus of related lessons. The classroom activity system mediates résumés letters students create in business technical communication courses. Students write these assignments teachers, who are outside professional systems. Because not immersed contexts which they assignments, difficulty effective identities being candidates assumed positions. Although ubiquitous courses, little research has looked at how struggle composing a identity. Most résumé analyzes materials submitted to employers after applicants leave school. author reviews student texts this genre argues that actually classroom-specific connection aspire. concludes on more immediate attainable goals rather than future career years away.
